How Rachael Friedman Helps Build Young Adult Community in Atlanta with the 20/30 Somethings Ministry

The postgraduate, young professional stage can be a significant life transition. Starting a new chapter, potentially in a new city or away from family and friends, can make young adults feel isolated from both the community and their faith.

The Cathedral of Christ the King (CTK) recognizes the need for Catholic young adults in metro Atlanta to have a spiritual home, and their 20/30 Somethings ministry answers that vital call. A place for people in the 21 to 39-year-old range, the ministry hosts multiple events each month that focus on spiritual enrichment, intentional fellowship, and giving back to others.

For Rachael Friedman, pouring herself into this flourishing ministry as the coordinator for the past two years has been a true and rewarding joy, especially since she felt the need to belong somewhere herself.

“[After graduation], I was pretty lonely. My sister [told me], ‘Hey, theres this group that I was involved in when I first graduated. You should get plugged in.’”

After this initial nudge and an invitation to join the ministry’s monthly adoration hour, called Pack the Cathedral, she found herself immersed in a community of people going through the same stage of life and desiring to become closer to God. “You’re getting together with people that have common values…and that provides such a comfort,” she expressed.

Friedman went on to serve in this ministry by selflessly leading a volunteer team of 15 to 17 people. Together, they work to unite the young adult Catholic community across metro Atlanta by hosting events that share the faith, serve the community, and encourage growing in friendship.

It’s common to see, on average, 475 to 500 young Catholic adults per month participating in activities including:

  • Socials at local breweries, parks, and pickleball courts
  • Monthly adoration and Discipleship Nights with special speakers on the Cathedral’s campus
  • Community service outreach at local food pantries and recreational centers
  • Smaller group gatherings, including book clubs, Holy Girl Walks, and the Coffee Buddy Program

With the roaring popularity of the ministry, the team works to sustain continued growth while creating new opportunities for this growing demographic to find spiritual nourishment and fellowship. The 20/30 Somethings ministry is self-funded, relying fully on the generosity of its members and donors. As the ministry grows to record-breaking numbers, so do the costs and resources. While events such as an annual Fundraiser Party help make future events free or affordable, year-round donations are encouraged as they allow for more growth and opportunity. Friedman says:

“It’s good to know that just support, whether it’s volunteering or financial, whatever you can, does make a difference.”

This ministry nurtures the demographic that is most susceptible to leaving the church, welcoming them with open arms. Without 20/30 Somethings, there would be a tremendous gap for young people who are looking for a spiritual community during a formative phase of life.

“Just pray…prayer is so powerful. Pray for those that don’t have a community that are in our age range to get plugged in, and also pray for the courage for them to [find community].”
